George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” Only Congress—the federal government—cannot intrude into religion. States can, and did when the Constitution was ratified. They established their own religions, and the Founders were fine with that. The First Amendment is there to protect the religious. I mean, that’s the whole reason they left England: a big, oppressive government (liberalism) that forced them to practice one form of Christianity when they wanted to practice another form of it (or not at all). The First Amendment protects the religious from the federal government. That’s all it says regarding religion. If it was meant to protect the federal government from religion, it would have also said that. But, again, “CONGRESS shall make no law” refers to Congress, i.e. the federal government. States can ban religions, enforce religions, ban Atheism, enforce Atheism, all they want. It’d be unwise to do so, of course, but it’s up to them.

He’s right it would be up to the States, except for the fact that Federal laws supersede State laws. So if a state law...
