Merry Christmas, Followers. I Give You a Real Debate I Just Had B-)
Liberal: [On Obama making the same promises now as in 2008] Maybe he has to promise the same things because the Congress is controlled by people of the opposite party who want to sabotage everything he tries to do.
Me: You make a good point. How long did the opposite party (Republicans) control Congress while Obama was in office?
Liberal: I’d say about two years. I’m not fully immersed in politics, so excuse me if I’m off. When last I checked, it was two years. Regardless, I know that even a year is enough for damage to be done when it comes to a President’s reputation.
Me: I didn't know Republicans have controlled Congress. I thought they only controlled the House, and I thought they only controlled that beginning in January of 2011. I thought Democrats were in control of both houses of Congress (the House AND the Senate) from 2007 to the end of 2010. I thought Obama had an entirely Democrat majority in Congress for his first two years in office and could do anything he wanted with that majority since Republicans couldn't stop him. Am I wrong?
Liberal: Again, I haven’t brushed up on this, so I’m not exactly an expert. Regardless, it takes time, even with your own party in control, to get something passed. Now, things are made much more difficult. Besides, where was he going to find time to do everything at once? It takes more than four years to correct all of the mistakes that a president (who I may add is eerily similar to Romney in terms of political agenda, ie. trickle down, taxing the middle class, etc.) made just four years ago.
Me: Well, the fact is that Obama had a Democratic Congress, both houses, for 2 full years. Republicans have only controlled HALF of Congress for 1.5 years. You admit you don't know much about it, so let me tell you: Obama, for 2 years, could have had Congress pass anything he wanted. Obama ALSO said that he'd be able to fix things in 3 years, and that if he doesn't, he won't deserve reelection. Reagan inherited a worse recession than Obama did, and Reagan's recovery was faster and stronger.
Liberal: Let me tell you something: I will vote for a candidate who isn’t a misogynistic, pro-rape, pro-big business, pro-trickle down effect (which, again, got us into this mess in the first place), or solely pro- upper class American. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some bras to burn.
Me: Whoa, whoa, whoa, Romney supports rape? Dude, I didn't know that. That's crazy. How can I support a candidate who supports rape?
Liberal: Anti-abortion even for rape victims counts. Check your privileges. Man, you are just as bad as Gretchen Wieners!
Me: Wait, I thought you said Romney supports rape, as in, you know, rape. Like, women getting raped. Were you exaggerating for emotional effect?
Liberal: No. If you redefine rape to make only specific types of rape “legitimate”, then you support other types of rape, do you not? Are you exaggerating to be an ignorant fool? Please leave me alone. I don’t think my itty, bitty, female brain can handle this…. eloquence…
Me: Oh, you're thinking of Todd Akin, with whom Romney disagrees strongly. Romney supports abortion in the case of rape. Why do you not know this? [She didn't respond.]
